10c Washington sextuple rate cover
Folded letter sheet with three 10-cent Washington stamps (Scott 2) mailed at Philadelphia on May 23, 1849, and addressed to Charles Potter, Esq., Providence RI.
The distance between Philadelphia and Providence RI is less than 300 miles, so the single letter rate would have been 5¢. Based on the prepayment of 30¢ in postage stamps, this very large cover must have weighed between 2 ½ and 3 ounces, justifying a six times rate.
The writer of the letter wrote the word "mail" on the address leaf.
