City letter carrier cap badge, number 2616
U.S. Post Office Department City Delivery Service cap badge, number 2616, with eyelet and cross pin attachment on verso (missing pin). Elliptical medallion with upper portion marked "U.S. MAIL" and lower portion inscribed "BOSTON" on ribbon pointing upward. Numerical figures positioned in center of medallion.
In many of the larger cities during the early twentieth century, postmasters still felt a sense of autonomy toward the daily operations of their offices and often resisted when the department tried to standardize procedures. The badge shown provides such an example. Although it did not meet department specifications, this style badge continued to be worn by Boston letter carriers throughout the early twentieth century.
