City letter carrier cap badge, number 1822
U.S. Post Office Department City Delivery Service cap badge, number 1822, with eyelet and tie attachment on verso.
Before 1887 the individual postmaster determined whether the letter carriers would wear a badge as part of the uniform. Many postmasters found the insignia necessary since it clearly identified the carrier as a member of the Post Office Department. Shown here is one such example of a badge used before the Post Office Department mandated badges in 1887.
