City letter carrier cap badge, number 2
U. S. Post Office Department City Delivery Service cap badge, number 2, with eyelet attachment on verso (cross pin missing). Spread eagle supporting a U. S. shield surmounts elliptical medallion with upper portion marked "U. S. POST OFFICE" and lower portion "MUNCIE, IND" in japanned raised block letters.
Shown here is an example of a letter carrier badge that met department specifications, worn by a city carrier in Muncie, Indiana. The badge is constructed of German silver, a metallic element containing copper, zinc, and nickel. The metal was chosen by the Post Office Department because of its hardness and resistance to corrosion, an important factor considering that the badge would often be exposed to harsh conditions.
