City letter carrier cap badge

Description:

U.S. Post Office Department City Delivery Service cap badge with horizontal hinged pin and clasp on verso. Laurel wreath (without bow) supersedes circular medallion inscribed "U.S. MAIL."

Many city and village postmasters required that letter carriers wear badges to identify themselves as employees of the Post Office Department before Postmaster General Randall mandated badges in 1887. The cap badge shown is one such example.
