Hotel Room Key Tokens

Paso Robles Hotel Owney tag

Description:

Owney received this trade check token from the Paso Robles Hotel in Paso Robles, California. The back side of the token notes that it was: “good for one drink.” There is no additional information available to indicate when the token was given to the dog. Trade checks were used much like coupons are today, offered by merchants as a lure to increase customers’ purchases.

Paso Robles, located in San Luis Obispo County, California, was along a branch of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. The luxurious, three-story hotel opened in 1891. It included a beauty parlor, barber shop, library and billiard rooms. Guests could also enjoy the hotel’s large garden and golf course.
