Samuel N. West Owney tag
Owney received this identification token from Samuel N. West, a Railway Mail Service (RMS) clerk who worked on railway mail trains between St. Paul, Minnesota, and Watertown, South Dakota. West is one of the few Railway Mail Service clerks whose tags are currently among Owney’s trinkets. The RMS clerks were the postal workers who allowed Owney to ride along in the cars while they were doing their work.
The top portion of the identification tag indicates that West was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF). The chain emblem with the letters “FLT” in the links stands for “Friendship, Love, and Truth.” The back side of the tag is the design of an eye (the All Seeing Eye), also a symbol used by Odd Fellows.
