Letter to David Walters from Rachel Walters


Single sheet of paper letter written on both sides in blue ink by Rachel Walters to her husband David. She writes of receiving the $25 and the ring he sent on 29 September 1862 (see Museum ID 1991.0291.5). She notes that she had not yet received the miniature and his clothing that he shipped. This exchange of letters between Private David Walters of the 5th Indiana Calvary and his wife Rachel occurred within a week’s time.

My Dear companion

through the mercies of an all wise God I am permitted this morning to address you by way of pen and paper I have had a sore throat but it is almost well now Willy is not very well he is cutting teeth which makes him very fretful but he is getting better so that he [crossout] can go down and play a little but I hope when these few lines reaches you they may find you well. I have received two letters from you lately one last thursday evening and one monday evening the one that you directed to Royal Center was remailed as sent on to Star city I got the money and the ring but I have not got the minature or clothes yet O David that ring what beautiful present I shall keep it as a token of love and true friendship you stated in one of your letters that you wanted mine and Willys minatures I will get them as soon as I can and send them to you you also stated that you wanted me to send your gogles but your mother has got them and I will have to wait til I can go down there and get them which I hope will not be many days and then I will send them to you for I am anxious that you should have them O David I would be so glad to have you to come home for I want to see you so bad and it would be so much more satisfaction to me to have you to come here than for me to go there you said that you wanted pap and me to come down and see you if you could not come home I cannot say whether we can come or not as I have not asked pap anything about it but I expect [crossout] that he will come if he can Mr Dickson is here he came here last night he is sick with the billious fever and I do not know how long he will stay here Mary Ann Stewarts funeral is to be preached the third sunday by Mr. Dickson there was no draft in this township nor in boon township either this is the fourth letter I have written you and I have received four from you and I would be glad to receive one every day or two if I could for I am always glad to hear from you but I must close as they are waiting to take the letter to the office and Willy is crying for me to take him please write as soon as you get this O David trust in god and pray that he may grant you a speedy return so no more at present
