Several Washington political officials were present at the Washington, DC, polo grounds on May 15, 1918 to watch the takeoff of the first regularly scheduled airmail service. Washington, DC postmaster Merritt O. Chance is shown holding the mailbag. To his right is Postmaster General Albert Burleson. Facing them are President and Mrs. Woodrow Wilson.
