5c Virginia Dare President Franklin D. Roosevelt sketch

Scott Catalogue USA: 796
Description:

Franklin D. Roosevelt's original design for the postage stamp commemorating the colony of Roanoke's 350th anniversary featured an image of the first English child born in America, Scott 796. The design was drawn on White House stationery, dated 4/10/37 and signed F. D. Roosevelt. Note his remarks below the drawing. On the sketch, he requested the square Virginia Dare stamp be 5-cent and in the color baby blue. The notation in the lower left corner indicates "approved by FDR 6/18/37." The stamp (example attached) was issued two months later.
