  • Half of a 10¢ stamp was used to pay the 5¢ postage on this June 1851 letter to Madison, Wisconsin, less than 300 miles from the sender in Mineral Point. Like other bisects, the stamp is cut along the diagonal. The frugal postmaster at Mineral Point continued to use a townmark reading 'Wis. T' (Wisconsin Territory) long after the territory became a state in 1848.
