3c Lewis & Clark Expedition single
This Lewis and Clark Expedition Issue stamp commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The expedition was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson after the acquisition of the Louisiana Purchase from France in 1803. It was carried out between 1804 and 1806 by the United States Army’s Corps of Discovery, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were to explore, investigate and map the new territory. They began their journey in St. Louis trekked to the Pacific Ocean, at the mouth of the Columbia River. The stamp features an image of Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and one of their Native American guides, Sacagawea, landing on a Missouri riverbank.
