4c Pony Express single
This Pony Express Centennial Issue stamp commemorates the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Pony Express. This delivery service, which carried mail, newspapers and small packages, ran for eighteen months on a route between St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. Riders traveled over 75 miles each in a relay system, which helped reduce travel time along the route to about ten days. The Pony Express ended once overland telegraph connections were completed.
