4c Petroleum Industry single
This Petroleum Industry Issue stamp commemorated the centennial of the completion of the nation’s first oil well in Titusville, Pennsylvania. The town is known for being the place where the modern oil industry began. The area was first settled in 1796 by Jonathan Titus. The oil rush began when Colonel Edwin Drake began drilling for oil along the shores of the aptly named Oil Creek. The stamp features an image of an oil derrick.
