He was appointed to the Supreme Court by President William Howard Taft in 1910. He signed from the court in 1916 in order to run for President, but lost to Woodrow Wilson to become the Republican Party’s nominee. He served as Secretary of State under President Warren G. Harding and later was appointed as Chief Justice of the United States by President Herbert Hoover.
