4c James Naismith - Basketball single
This Naismith-Basketball Issue stamp honors basketball and James Naismith, the Canadian born director of physical education who invented the game in 1891 at the YMCA College in Springfield, Massachusetts. Forced inside by the harsh New England winter, he drew upon many of the popular sports of the time, including soccer, baseball and football, and developed the game of basketball and wrote the original rule set. The stamp features a hand throwing a basketball into a net.
