First Native Americans In Michigan

This is the story of the State of Michigan. The original inhabitants of the area were the Hopewell Indians, living in Michigan over two thousand years ago. We know about them from the artifacts recovered from the Indian Mounds (a large area of dirt where people and material objects were buried).

The next dominant groups of Native Americans in the area were the Three Fires (Potawatomi, Odawa & Ojibway). These Native Americans lived in Wigwams and Longhouses. These three tribes had similar languages, traded amongst themselves and lived peacefully.
