Nobel Prize In Literature

On October 8, the 2009 Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Romanian-born German novelist Herta Müller. The Swedish Academy who picked Ms. Müller for the Prize described her as a writer “who, with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed.”

The stamps at right feature American recipients of the Nobel Prize in Literature including the first American man to win the Prize, Sinclair Lewis and the first American woman, Pearl Buck.

Novelist Sinclair Lewis received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930. This 14-cent stamp honoring him was issued march 21, 1985.

In 1938, Pearl Buck became the first American woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. This stamp honoring her was issued June 25, 1983.

Playwright Eugene O'Neill received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1936. This 1-dollar stamp honoring him was issued October 16, 1967.
