National Bank Note Company

Formed in 1859, National Bank Note successfully bid against established engraving firms to win the 1861 stamp contract just after the start of the Civil War.

National Bank Note may be best known for introducing grills—tiny indented patterns meant to soak in cancellation ink and prevent the reuse of stamps. National kept the stamp contract through 1873. In 1879, it merged with American Bank Note.
