The Postal Service issued a 37-cent Kwanzaa special stamp in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane of twenty on October 10, 2002, in Washington, DC. The stamp, designed by Synthia Saint James of Los Angeles, California, went on sale nationwide October 11, 2002.
The stamp was reissued with a new denomination, having first been issued in 1997 as part of the Holiday Celebrations Series. This special stamp features the seven symbols that are used to celebrate the seven principles that are the foundation of Kwanzaa.
Avery Dennison printed 40 million stamps in the gravure process.
