The Postal Service honored football coach Bear Bryant with the issuance of a 32-cent commemorative stamp on August 7, 1997, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
The stamp features a portrait of Paul William "Bear" Bryant in a familiar scene associated with his career as a college football coach. Bryant was the head football coach, over a span of thirty-eight years, for four colleges whose teams won numerous championships.
The Bryant stamp has the same design as the one featured on the sheet of four Legendary Football Coaches stamps issued on July 25, 1997. However, the stamp on the individual sheet bears a red bar over the name that appears at the top of the stamp.
Designed by Carl Herrman of Laguna Niguel, California, and illustrated by Daniel Moore of Birmingham, Alabama, the stamp was issued in a pane of twenty and printed by Ashton-Potter (USA), Ltd., in the offset process.
