Chinese New Year Issue: Year of the Rabbit

The Postal Service issued a 33-cent Lunar New Year: Rabbit commemorative stamp on January 5, 1999, in Los Angeles, California.

The year of the Hare began February 16, 1999. The hare symbolizes generosity, kindness, a quick wit, and the ability to make peace. It was the seventh design in the Lunar New Year series, which began with the Rooster in 1992, followed by the Dog, Boar, Rat, Ox, and Tiger. Designer Clarence Lee, an American of Chinese descent, combines a paper-cut design and calligraphy.

The stamp was designed and illustrated by Clarence Lee of Honolulu, Hawaii. Sennett Security Products (SSP) printed 51 million stamps in panes of twenty in the gravure process.
