The 15-cent American Education commemorative stamp was first placed on sale at Franklin, Massachusetts, on September 12, 1980. The design commemorated the establishment of the new United States Education Department. This was the fourth stamp to be printed privately under the terms of a contract awarded by the Postal Service in l978.
The stamp was designed by Bradbury Thompson and was issued in sheets of fifty.
