1988 Winter Olympic Games Issue

A 22-cent US commemorative stamp recognizing the 1988 Olympic Winter Games was issued on January 10, 1988, in Anchorage, Alaska. The stamp was the fifteenth US issue to commemorate the Olympic Winter Games. Coincidentally, the 1988 competition in Calgary, Alberta, was the fifteenth competition held since the Olympic Games were divided into separate summer and winter events in 1924.

The first of these stamps recognized the first Olympic Winter Games in the United States, the 1932 games in Lake Placid, New York. It showed an airborne skier competing in the Nordic combined, a blend of cross-country skiing and ski jumping. The second stamp marked the return of the games to America in 1960, when they were held in Squaw Valley, California. Starting with 1972, one or more stamps have been issued in honor of each Olympic Winter Games.

Bart Forbes of Dallas, Texas, designed the 1988 Winter Olympics commemorative stamp. He also designed the 22-cent Abigail Adams stamp issued in 1985.

The stamps were printed in the photogravure process by the American Bank Note Company, with panes of fifty.
