Ratification of the Constitution Bicentennial Issue: Rhode Island

The Postal Service honored Rhode Island with a commemorative stamp issued on May 29, 1990, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, at the Slater Mill historic site.

Slater Mill, built by English immigrant Samuel Slater, was the first factory in America to successfully produce cotton yarn with water-powered machines, marking the beginning of the factory system in Rhode Island.

Designed by Robert Brangwynne, the stamps were engraved in the offset/intaglio process by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and issued in panes of fifty.
