The Department issued this 4-cent stamp through the San Diego, California, post office on August 20, 1961, to mark the 50th anniversary of Naval Aviation. Designed by John Maass, the stamp features a silhouette representation of the first naval airplane and the Naval Air insignia.
The stamp was printed by the rotary process, electric-eye perforated, and issued in panes of fifty stamps each. An initial printing of 100 million stamps was authorized.
