The 8-cent Sidney Lanier postage stamp, the third in the American Poet Series, was first placed on sale at Macon, Georgia, on February 3, 1972.
Sidney Lanier (1842-1881) was a notable American poet and musician. Lanier died at the age of 39 from complications due to tuberculosis, which he contracted during the Civil War.
The stamp was designed by William A. Smith and was issued in sheets of fifty, with an initial printing of 135 million.
