The 5-cent Adlai Stevenson (1900-1965) memorial stamp was first placed on sale through the Bloomington, Illinois, post office on October 23, 1965. Stevenson was governor of Illinois and US Ambassador to the United Nations.
Lithography and Intaglio printing were combined in the production of this stamp, which was designed by George Samerjan of New York City. The portrait was based on a photograph by Philippe Halsman.
The stamp was printed on the Giori press and issued in panes of fifty. An initial printing of 115 million stamps was authorized.
