The 5-cent stamp commemorating the 400th anniversary of the first continuous permanent European settlement in the new world was placed on sale through the Saint Augustine, Florida, post office on August 28, 1965. A stamp identical in design, except for the necessary differences in the caption and denomination, was released simultaneously in Spain.
Designed by Brook Temple, the stamp depicts a Spanish explorer with Spain's royal banner in the background.
The stamp was printed on the Giori press and issued in panes of fifty. An initial printing of 114 million stamps was authorized.
