Churchill Memorial Issue

This 5-cent United States postage stamp honoring Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965) was first placed on sale on May 13, 1965, through the Fulton, Missouri, post office. It was on the campus of Westminster College in Fulton that Churchill made his famous "Iron Curtain" speech in 1946.

Designed by Richard Hurd, the stamp is based on the famous "Angry Lion" photograph by Yousuf Karsh of Ottawa, Canada.

This stamp was printed by the rotary process and issued in panes of fifty. An initial printing of 112 million stamps was authorized.
