This 5-cent stamp in tribute to American music was first placed on sale on October 15, 1964, in New York, New York, where the headquarters of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers is located. The society was founded in 1914.
Designed by Bradbury Thompson, the stamp features wind and string instruments played at the time American became a nation.
This stamp was printed on the Giori press and issued in panes of fifty stamps each. An initial printing of 120 million stamps was authorized.
