Red Cross Centenary Issue

This 5-cent stamp commemorating the centennial of the International Red Cross and the organization's contribution to the historic Cuban prisoner exchange was first placed on sale in Washington, DC, on October 29, 1963. Designed by Victor S. McCloskey, Jr., this stamp is based on a photograph of the freighter SS Morning Light, one of the Mercy ships used to return invasion prisoners from Cuba.

This stamp was printed on the Giori press and issued in panes of fifty stamps each. An initial printing of 130 million stamps was authorized.
