Senator Brien McMahon Issue

The 4-cent Brien McMahon commemorative stamp was issued through the Norwalk, Connecticut, post office on July 28, 1962. The stamp paid tribute to the late Connecticut senator for his role in opening the way to peaceful uses of atomic energy. Designed by V.S. McCloskey, Jr., the stamp features a reproduced portrait of Senator McMahon, based on a photograph by Glogau of Washington, DC, facing McCloskey's rendition of the atomic symbol.

The stamp was printed by the rotary process, electric-eye perforated, and issued in panes of fifty stamps each. An initial printing of 120 million stamps was authorized.
