The Department issued this 4-cent commemorative postage stamp through the Titusville, Pennsylvania, post office on August 27, 1959. It marked the 100th anniversary of the completion of the first oil well by Colonel Edwin L. Drake.
Designed by Robert Foster, the stamp features an oil derrick against a light background. It was printed by the rotary process, electric-eye perforated, and issued in panes of fifty stamps each. An initial printing of 120 million stamps was authorized.
