The 4-cent, forty-nine Star American Flag stamp was issued through the Auburn, New York, post office on July 4, 1959, the date the new flag became official. The change of design in the flag came about because of the accession of Alaska to statehood on January 3, 1959.
The stamp was designed by Stevan Dohanos and printed on the Giori press. It was issued in panes of fifty stamps each and had an initial printing of 120 million.
