The Department issued this 4-cent stamp honoring Journalism and Freedom of the Press on September 22, 1958, through the Columbia, Missouri, post office. The stamp was issued on the 50th anniversary of the founding of the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri.
The stamp features a hand holding an old-fashioned quill pen, a simplified stylization of a hand printing press, and horizontal and vertical bars, suggesting type bearers. The words "Freedom of the Press" are included in the design, with "US Postage 4c" arranged horizontally across the bottom of the stamp.
The stamp was printed by the rotary process, electric-eye perforated, and issued in panes of fifty stamps each. An initial printing of 120 million stamps was authorized.
