The Department issued this 3-cent stamp to commemorate the centennial anniversary of Booker T. Washington, through the Booker Washington Birthplace, Virginia, post office on April 5, 1956. The stamp's central design features a cabin similar to the one in which Booker T. Washington was born. The wording "US Postage" is arranged across the top of the stamp with the denomination "3c" directly beneath at the right, both in dark face Gothic. The wording "Centennial of Booker T. Washington" in whiteface Gothic, is arranged in one line across the bottom of the stamp.
The stamp was printed by the rotary process, electric-eye perforated, and issued in panes of fifty stamps each. The printing of 120 million stamps was authorized.
