Thirteenth Amendment Issue

A 3-cent violet stamp was issued on October 20, 1940 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the thirteenth amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The amendment abolished slavery in the United States. The stamp's design reproduces the bronze sculpture by Thomas Ball, paid by voluntary subscriptions from emancipated slaves, which depicts Lincoln presenting the Emancipation Proclamation to a black man. The statue stands in Lincoln Park in the District of Columbia.
