Kent Kobersteen has collected stamps since childhood. In 1977 he began specializing in the 5-cent U.S. Beacon airmail stamp of 1928.
His collection centers on that single stamp and consists of production varieties and unusual usages of the stamp. Because the late 1920s was a time of great growth in the airmail, many interesting and unusual usages, rates, and routes exist. Kobersteen's exhibit has won national gold and grand awards, and was shown at the Washington 2006 World Philatelic Exhibition. Kobersteen retired in 2005 from the position of Director of Photography of the National Geographic Magazine.
