3c Washington type II on Confederate cover
Two United States 3-cent Washington, Type II, stamps (USA Scott 26), cancelled by a Virginia Central Railroad station agent who might have also been the local postmaster. Envelope is postmarked by "Cobham VA C.R.R. May 13 (1861)" on an envelope addressed to William Cabell Rives. Rives was a member of the Provisional Confederate Congress meeting in Montgomery. He had previously served in the United States Senate, the House of Representatives, and as Ambassador to France.
This letter was mailed about a month after Virginia seceded from the United States—April 17, 1861. Virginia was admitted to the Confederacy on May 7, 1861, and hence this cover represents Confederate use of United States postage.
