George Washington Masonic Memorial

Complete first day Washington Bicentennial Issue cover

Located in Alexandria, Virginia, on the site Thomas Jefferson once suggested as ideal for the nation’s Capitol, the George Washington Masonic Memorial serves many functions: a meeting place for Masons, a research library, a banquet and concert hall, and a tourist destination. Primarily, however, the colossal structure seeks to “inspire humanity through education to emulate and promote the virtues, character, and vision of George Washington, the Man, the Mason and Father of our Country.”

Huge crowds, including President Herbert Hoover, a Mason, attended the week-long George Washington Masonic Memorial dedication ceremony and Masonic celebration. Officials used the Bible on which George Washington took his oath of office as president.
