3c brownish carmine Washington Type I imperforate single
used; relief B; position 27L2L (position 27 pf left pane of Plate 2 late); guide dot below lower right diamond block; three lines recut in upper left triangle
This position contains a known Plate variety, seen just to the right of the lower left rosette in the white oval. This scratch (or flaw) starts at the 3 o'clock position of the lower left rosette and travels northeast, passing through the horizontal lines, through the white oval, and into the cross-hatched background below Washington's chin. The fine impression of this stamp allows a clear view. Later impressions are often worn, making the variety less visible.
The stamp is cancelled with a black ". . . RIVER" October-dated CDS (circular date stamp).
