Siege of Paris Mail

Folded letter from Paris office at Gros-Caillou

Description:

This folded letter originated from the Paris office at Gros-Caillou on January 20, 1871, (third collection) and was prepaid 20 centimes for the French internal letter rate to Poitiers, “Par Ballon Monté.” Based on the date and time of collection, it is most likely that this letter was carried out of Paris by the balloon Général Daumesnil.

The Général Daumesnil carried 280 kilograms of mail, and despite a gas leak in one of the valves, the balloon landed safely in Belgium.
