Siege of Paris Mail

Folded letter from Paris office at Place de la Bourse

Description:

This folded letter originated from the Paris office at Place de la Bourse on January 10, 1871, (fourth collection) and was prepaid 20 centimes for the French internal letter rate to Dinan, “Par Ballon Monté.” Based on the date and time of collection, it is likely that this letter was carried out of Paris by the balloon Kepler.

The Kepler carried 160 kilograms of mail. The flight remained uneventful despite very cold weather, and the balloon landed safely in an unoccupied region of France.
