Siege of Paris Mail

Folded letter from Paris office at Rue Bonaparte

Description:

This folded letter originated from the Paris office at Rue Bonaparte on January 5, 1871, (third collection) and was prepaid 20 centimes for the French internal letter rate to Etretat, “Par Ballon Monté.” Based on the date and time of collection, it is likely that this letter was carried out of Paris by the balloon Duquesne.

The Duquesne carried 150 kilograms of mail. The gondola basket was outfitted with two hand-cranked propellers in an attempt to steer the balloon on an intended course. This arrangement did not prove successful. At the mercy of the wind, the balloon landed in a German- occupied region of France.
