Folded letter from Paris office at Rue de la Sainte Chapelle
This folded letter originated from the Paris office at Rue de la Sainte Chapelle on October 1, 1870, (fourth collection) and was prepaid 20 centimes for the French internal letter rate to Lyon. Note that this letter shows the “Par Ballon Monté” endorsement that was required on all balloon letters as of September 29, 1870.
For some reason, it appears that this letter did not immediately leave Paris but rather was held for one of the larger mid-October balloons. Based on the Lyon arrival date of October 17, 1870, this letter was probably carried out of Paris aboard the Godefroy Cavaignac, the Jean Bart No. 1, or the Jules Favre No. 1.
