Folded letter from Paris central office
This folded letter originated from the Paris central office on December 29, 1870, (fourth collection) and was prepaid 20 centimes for the French internal letter rate to St. Brieuc, “Par Ballon Monté.” Based on the date and time of collection plus the St. Brieuc arrival datestamp of January 1, 1871, it is most likely that this letter was carried out of Paris by the balloon Armée de la Loire.
The Armée de la Loire carried 232 kilograms of mail, and the flight was relatively uneventful. The balloon landed safely in the middle of a French camp formed by the Second Army of the Loire.
