Quarterly accounting record for a post office
Description:
Postmaster Johnathan Rouse signed this accounting record for the Tomhannock, New York, post office. The one page form reports postage and transactions totals for the quarter April 1 to June 30, 1824, for the general post office.
Through the regulated accounting of all its branches, the postal bureaucracy kept track of its finances and resources from the top down to individual post offices. Each post office's financial records were critical, not just to the central administrative office but also to postmasters, whose salaries were based on office receipts.
