Telegram to Praeger on September 5, 1918
This is a copy of a Western Union telegram that Capt. Benjamin B. Lipsner wired to Otto Praeger, second assistant postmaster general, in Washington, D.C., on September 5, 1918. The time sent or received is not included. It is uncertain whether Lipsner sent the telegram before or after he received the telegram from Praeger giving him similar information.
In the telegram Lipsner informed Praeger that pilot Edward V. “Turk” Gardner landed in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, because of a broken gas line. He indicated that Gardener may precede to Cleveland, Ohio, his next stop on the airmail service’s New York-to-Chicago pathfinder flight. Using the word “may” implied the uncertainty of Gardner continuing the flight.
