Letter written to John Marron
In an undocumented conference between Freeman Rawdon and the postmaster general, Rawdon was apparently told that the contractor's claims about not having recovered expenses for producing the dies and plates for the 1847 Issue would have been given due weight in selecting the firm to produce the 1851 Issue of stamps.
This letter, while repeating those claims, asks that the firm be given additional time [to May 10] to enter the competition. April 20 was the last day allowed under the original invitation to bid. It also says that they would produce the new stamps on the same terms as before and that the stamps would be ready for delivery by May 20.
The request to extend the time was rejected by the postmaster general.
